If I think what is the most important thing to do well in business I have no doubts in providing you with the answer. It is having objectives! Let’s say at front that I am talking about objectives and NOT goals.
Goals are generic in nature. Objectives are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timing (SMART). A goal as an example is: I want to become rich. An objective is: I will make 1 million dollars by 2018.
Not having objectives is the most important reason why people fail in business and unfortunately in life. I recently have listened again the famous audio recorded by Earl Nightingale in the 60th called the “Strangest Secret”.
If you have time, I encourage you to listen what Nightingale has to say about drafting your objectives. He is a very religious man, but even if you do not believe in God, I am sure you will understand that having a direction, persistency, courage, and a complete dedication to what you do, is the key for success, whatever success means to you.
In exercising leadership in life or at work, please consider having an objective you truly believe in, because it gives you the purpose in life you look for. I suggest attaching values to your purpose.
After all, helping others and helping yourself is the best result ever.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
If you know where you are going it will be easiest for others following you! Enjoy the journey and stay focused!
